A Broadly shaped conical tree, quite open in structure. Deciduous. Has glossy obovate, toothed dark green leaves with dark grey fissured bark. Has male and female catkins flowering in Spring. A native of Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Has woody dark brown fruits up to 2cm long.
