Quercus(oak) — White Swamp Oak
Quercus bicolour
A deciduous, fast growing tree reaching 20-25m with a rounded dense canopy. Has attractive dark grey bark which is roughly furrowed and streaked with white. The bark on the branches tends to peel. Its lobed dark green leaves turn to brown/yellow and occasionally red tones in Autumn. Its Spring flowers are inconspicuous. Also has acorns. The White Swamp Oak is typically a wetland tree, however, they tolerate drought and moderate soil compactness. Best in moist drained soils. Do not plant in Alkaline areas as it is prone to iron chlorosis. Great tree for landscaping in parks and wetlands.
Quercus(oak) — Scarlet Oak
Quercus coccinea
This open rounded, medium sized (20-30m high x 15m wide) tree which grows rapidly is noted for spectacular glossy lobed green leaves which transform to bright red in Autumn. Its smooth grey/brown bark becomes darker and furrowed with age. It also carries inconspicuous yellow/ green flowers in Spring. Drought tolerant growing in sandy gravel zones with little organic matter. Prefers drained soils and grows quicker with Summer irrigation. Scarlet oaks provide lovely shade and colour for streets, parks and avenues.
Sapium — Chinese Tallow
Sapium sebiferum
Small to medium sized freely branching tree which produces spectacular Autumn colour as leaves progress from green to shades orange, yellow and purplish reds. Flowers are light green/yellow and are noticable against the foliage (in spikes 20cm long) Captules appear turning from green to brown/black with maturity. Chinese Tallows are extremely vigorous and rapidly growing. They require full sun and drained moist soils. Prune in Winter. Chinese Tallow make great shade trees with brilliant colour.
Syringa(lilac) — Alice Eastwood
Syringa hyacinthiflora 'Alice Eastwood'
A strong deciduous shrub reaching 3x3m which produces spectacular double mauve/pink fragrant blooms with a touch of blue through mid Spring. Flowers consist of ten petals and are clustered together in a loose panicle on a strong stem. Leaves are broad to ovate and turn purplish shades in Autumn. Alice Eastwood makes a wonderful hedge/screen but is also perfect for small gardens. A fragrant shrub admired by many people.
Syringa(lilac) — Belle De Nancy
Syringa vulgaris 'Belle de Nancy'
A small to medium sized (2x2m) deciduous shrub. Known for its beautiful semi double to double deep lilac/pink blooms tinged with blue in Spring. Flowers are extremely fragrant and clustered together forming a dense spike (12cm). Leaves are ovate and glabrous to 12cm also. Belle de Nancy bloom profusely and make superb cut flowers. They are suitable for small gardens and containers.
