Japanese Elm - Zelkova Serrata
Medium sized deciduous 'v' shaped tree with upright spreading branches which form a broad round canopy. Japanese Elms have a multiple trunk covered in grey/white to brown bark. This is smooth and exfoliates in irregular areas to reveal orange underbark. Flowers are greenish/yellow in Spring and are inconspicuous. Its pretty dark green, serrated leaves display wonderful Autumn colours including shades of orange, yellow and reds. Zelkova Serrata's provide good shade. Plant in parks and streets.

Origin: Public variety.
Status: Public.
Tree shape: Medium sized tree with short multiple trunks. Has upright spreading branches with a broad round canopy and 'v' shaped.
Flower: Flowers in Spring which are yellow/green but inconspicuous. Flowers in groups along the stem.
Growth rate: Medium.
Height: 30m.
Leaf shape: Alternately arranged dark green leaves, simple ovate to oblong-ovate with serrated margins and rounded or subcodate base.
Leaf colour: Green turning yellow, orange and red in Autumn.
Growing conditions: Prefers full to part sun with moist well drained fertile soils. Rather hardy and tolerant to heat, poor soil and different pH levels. May require protection from frost when young.
