Gingko — Maidenhair Tree

Gingko biloba

Maidenhair Tree - Gingko biloba

The Maidenhair tree has fan shaped leaves turning from matt green to bright yellow in Autumn. Its grey/brown bark is fissured. Produces a fleshy plum like seed which turns from yelllow/green to orange/brown when ripe. Can grow up to 40 metres high. A native of China. Fossil records dated between 150-200 million years ago indicate similar trees were distributed all across the world. However, this genus has only a single member and is usually classed as a conifer. It is however, believed to be even more primitive than conifers. Its Autumn buttery yellow colour makes a spectacular display.
