Silver Birch - Betula pendula
Silver Birch has a slender crown with silvery a white trunk which becomes fissured and black with age at the base. Branches are pendulous with broadly ovate leaves. Silver Birches are commonly planted in clumps of at least 5 trees. These trees are spectacular in Winter when they have no leaves and show off their magnificent bark on the trunk. Planted in front of a dark background will show off its bark. Spectacular when used in conjunction with night lighting. Also known as the European White Birch. A native of Asia and Europe.

Plant information
Origin: Public variety.
Status: Public.
Tree shape: Slender and pendulous habit.
Flower: Long drooping male catkins to 6cm long. Female catkins can be either upright or drooping and are borne separately on the same tree in Spring.
Height: Grows up to 20 metres.
Width: Up to 6 metres wide.
Leaf shape: Ovate double toothed, glossy dark green deciduous leaves turning yellow in Autumn.
Growing conditions: Can tolerate some sandy soils to clay.
