A Broadly shaped conical tree, quite open in structure. Deciduous. Has glossy obovate, toothed dark green leaves with dark grey fissured bark. Has male and female catkins flowering in Spring. A native of Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Has woody dark brown fruits up to 2cm long.

Origin: Public variety.
Status: Public.
Flower: Long male catkins (approximately 10cm) yellow/green and small red upright female catkins flowering in Spring.
Height: Grows up to 20 metres.
Leaf shape: Obovate, 10cm long x 7.5cm wide, toothed.
Leaf colour: Dark green leaf (smooth) with tufts of hair in the vein axils beneath.
Growing conditions: Fast growing. Will tolerate cool, moist positions. Hardy to frost.
