Sweetheart - Syringa vulgaris 'Sweetheart'

Medium sized (3x2m) upright growing, woody deciduous shrub with fragrant dark dusty pink buds which open revealing pale pink blooms in mid Spring. The two colours look very striking together. Its heart shaped green leaves are deciduous. Sweetheart is excellent for smaller sites being an upright and narrow growing shrub which also produces outstanding blooms.

Origin: Public variety.

Status: Public.

Bloom period: Mid Spring.

Tree shape: Medium shrub, upright growing.

Flower: Double dusty darker pink buds which open to pale pink. Small to medium flowers. Fragrant.

Height: 3m.

Width: 2m.

Leaf shape: Deciduous, heart shaped and green.

Growing conditions: Lilacs grow well in cooler areas. They prefer a sunny site in drained rich soil. They dislike acidic soils. Prune. Remove any dead flower heads. Younger shrubs are susceptible to frost. Plant graft union below ground level.

 

Disease: Suffers from powdery mildew and lilac blight. Pests include borers, leaf miner and scale.
