Sensation - Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation'

Medium sized (3x2m) open growing woody shrub which produces the most striking dark purple and white edged flowers in mid Spring. Blooms are dense, pyramidal panicles, clustered together and have a wonderful sweet smelling fragrance. Foliage is deep green and heart shaped. Sensations are truly one of the most spectacular lilacs and a brilliant addition to any garden.

Plant information

Origin: Public variety.

Status: Public.

Bloom period: Mid Spring.

Tree shape: Medium open habit. Woody shrub.

Flower: Single. Each petal is dark purple surrounded by white edging. Blooms are clustered together forming a dense pyramidal panicle. Faint fragrance - sweet.

Height: 3m.

Width: 2m.

Leaf shape: Ovate to cordate 12cm long - heart shaped.

Leaf colour: Dark Green.

Growing conditions: Lilacs prefer a sunny position in drained rich soil. They dislike acidic soils. Responds well to pruning. Remove dead flowers. Maintain water through dry spells. Younger shrubs are susceptible to frost damage in Spring. Plant with graft union below ground.

 

Disease: Suffers from powdery mildew and lilac blight. Pests include borers, leaf miner and scale.
