A very appealing variety due to its juicy and sweet fruit. The Hickson mandarin is popular with growers as it can be stored for several months without any loss of quality.

Fruit information

Maturity: Mid season July to November.

Fruit size: Medium to large.

Fruit shape: Flattened shape, slight neck.

Skin: Thin (2mm) and easily peeled. Skin is a reddish colour.

Flesh colour: Orange-red.

Texture: High juice content. 10-15 seeds per fruit.

Flavour: Very sweet and juicy.

Seed or stone: Seeded.

Storage: Stores well for export in coolstore.

Storage period: Several months with no loss in quality.

Yield: 60% non bearing.

Status: Public.

Pollinators: Self fertile.

Tree shape: Prone to branch splitting.

Height: 3-4 metres approximately.

Growing conditions: Full sun.

 

Disease: May be susceptible to mite damage. 'Winter yellows' can affect young trees.

Cultivation notes: Pruning, fruit thinning and branch support are required.

Harvest notes: Harvest July to August.

Comments: Similar to Ellendale but with earlier maturity and more stable acidity.
