Royal - Prunus armeniaca 'Royal'

Royal is a high quality oval shaped small to medium sized fruit with attractive yellow/golden red tinged skin. It has a great sweet tart flavour. This is a popular variety and is also self fertile. It matures approximately December. Is suitable for drying, making into jams and is superb in desserts.

Fruit information

Maturity: Approximately late December.

Fruit size: Small to medium.

Fruit shape: Oval.

Skin: Golden yellow with red tinge. Very intense colour.

Flesh colour: Golden.

Flavour: Good flavour - rich, sweet and tarty.

Seed or stone: Freestone.

Chill: Medium.

Tree shape: Deciduous dense spreading tree.

Flower: White/pinkish 5 petalled flower with many stamens in Spring.

Height: 8-12m approximately.

Growing conditions: Prefers a mediterranean climate..

 

Disease: Suffers from brown rot in humid areas.

Cultivation notes: Requires good water over the growing season. Is frost sensitive. Plant in full sun. Needs fertile well drained soils. Fruit may need thinning to increase overall size

Harvest notes: Pick fruit when firm. If unripe store at room temperature in a dark place. Once fully ripe it will last 1-4 days in a plastic bag in the fridge. Handle apricots carefully as they bruise easily.
