Van Chery - Prunus avium 'van'
Medium sized, vigorous, upright spreading tree, has dark green foilage which progresses through red, orange and yellow tones in Autumn. Produces sweet, glossy, red, heart shaped cherries with a wonderful flavour. Is a versatile cherry, great straight from the tree or in coooking. (jams / preserving.) Van has a strong cropping habit but is sucseptable to rain cracking.

Fruit information
Maturity: medium to late season. December.
Fruit size: Medium to large.
Fruit shape: Heart shaped.
Skin: Glossy black red.
Flesh colour: Dark red.
Texture: Firm and juicy.
Flavour: Sweet. Excellent flavour.
Storage period: Few days at room temperature. Canned or frozen fruit lasts several months.
Chill: High.
Yield: Tends to over-crop. Must be managed to prevent small fruit. (Do have short stems).

Origin: Cherries originated in Europe and Western Asia.
Status: Public.
Pollinators: Bing, Stella, Ron seedling, Sunburst, Lanbert, Rainer and Early Burlat.
Bloom period: Spring.
Tree shape: Medium sized, multibranched tree with a rounded spreading habit.
Growth rate: Vigorous.
Leaf shape: Elliptic, accute tips, serrate margins, long petiole.
Leaf colour: Dark green foilage. Exellent Autumn colour changing through red, orange and yellow tones.
Growing conditions: Plant cherries in deep well drained fertile soils from gravels to sandy loams, with a pH range between 6.2/6.8. Plants prefer full sun and air circulation to prevent ripe cherries splitting under rainy conditions. Aviod areas prone to frosts and wind.
Disease: Brown Rot, Bacterial Cranker and Cherry Leaf Spot are all common.
