Non Astringent Persimmon

This medium sized, upright growing tree produces fruit similar to Fuyu. During April/May large segmented orange/red fruit matures with a crisp firm skin and a fantastic sweet flavour. Trees are generally self fertile but other varieties can be used under some circumstances. Fruit is seedless. Jiro are known for their superb quality and good storing capabilities. Great eaten fresh, mix in salads and dried fruit.

Growth rate: slow growing.

Growing conditions: Is cold hardy. Plant in full sun and sheltered, well drained deep sandy loam or loam soils. Prefers slightly acid soils and is drought tolerant, although does require good watering over the growing season.

 

Disease: Can suffer from scale, crown call and dieback. Two spotted Mite, Mealy bud, fruit fly, thrips and birds.

Harvest notes: Non astringent fruit can be eaten whilst firm and crisp. Tends to have a longer shelf life

Comments: Persimmons also make a great specimen tree as they have astonishing autumn leaf displays of oranges and reds. Leaves then drop off to have a bare tree with the striking fruit.
