Nagami Cumquat - Fortunella margarita 'Nagami'

A small evergreen tree which is well suited to growing in pots. Due to slow maturity fruit remains on the tree for a long time. The fruit can be eaten fresh or used for preserved, brandies, jams etc.

Fruit information

Maturity: October to January.

Fruit size: Small 3.5cm long x 2-4cm wide.

Fruit shape: Oblong, tear shaped, oval.

Skin: Sweet and oily, bright orange, thin.

Flesh colour: Bright orange.

Texture: 2-5 seeds, very pulpy.

Flavour: Quite sour, however, the skin is usually eaten as it is quite sweet.

Seed or stone: Seeded.

Storage period: stores and ships well due to thick peel.

Yield: crops very heavily but matures unevenly.

Origin: Public variety.

Status: PUBLIC.

Pollinators: Self fertile.

Bloom period: after November.

Tree shape: Small evergreen tree, thornless. Light green branches.

Flower: white flowers, sweetly scented.

Height: 3m approximately.

Leaf colour: compact foliage, very glossy dark green.

Growing conditions: Prefers full sun and well watered. Will grow all throughout Australia apart from mountain areas.

 

Disease: Can suffer from sooty mould and scale insects.

Cultivation notes: Well suited for colder climates but requires warm weather for a better crop. Has sweeter fruit when grown in warmer climates.

Harvest notes: Fruit is clipped with leaves still on - approximately 2-3 leaves.

Comments: Protect from frost when young. Requires well drained soil. Grow well in pots.
